Occasionally there is a news story that causes us to echo David Letterman's famous line, "What were you thinking?" Such is the case with a widely reported incident in which a naked man caused several serious accidents in Scottsdale. What was he thinking? And why did he strip in mid-traffic?
According to news sources, the accident in Scottsdale involved one naked man who allegedly caused multiple car accidents with personal injuries -- including some that were described as life-threatening.
The first event occurred near Hayden Road and Via De Ventura Road when the man's car struck a convertible. The driver of the convertible was thrown from his car and reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle then took of all his clothing and allegedly car-jacked a Prius by throwing a woman out of the car. She suffered minor injuries.
The naked man, now in a stolen Prius, traveled a few blocks to 90th Street and Shea Boulevard where he struck several other cars. A witness stated that the naked man was thrown through the windshield of the Prius, but despite that he jumped up onto the roof of a minivan while yelling that the Indians were coming.
Several people were injured in accidents caused by the man and involving about 10 to 12 cars. None of the other injuries were described as life-threatening, although some were serious.
When the police arrived, the naked man was taken into custody without incident. There was no word on his mental state of mind.
Police are expected to charge the man with carjacking and a hit-and-run. In addition to his criminal charges, the man could be held liable in civil court for the personal injuries the accidents and his behavior caused to others.
